Fears that the contract would go to a French company were behind Congressman Darrell Issa lobbying for a CDMA phone system for Iraq - or so he said. But the military authorities have gone for GSM - and as forecast here, an American contractor gets the business. |
According to Tony Dennis in the Inquirer the beneficiary will be MCI and the technology will be GSM.
The report doesn't say whether it will be an 1800 MHz or 1900 MHz system, but it does say it will cost $45million and provide capacity for fewer than 10,000 phones.
Congressman Issa originally opposed the installation of a GSM system because it was "French" and would put money in the hands of Alcatel.
