PC retailer Evesham Technology has unveiled what it believes is "the first ever PC offering in Europe to include a Viewsonic airpanel" - a portable display based on Microsoft Windows Powered Smart Display technology.

It will be a big relief for Viewsonic, and an even bigger relief for Microsoft, which has faced not just criticism, but scorn from observers who described the "smart display" concept as "weird" and "expensive".

It remains to be seen how sales go, however: price is the question still. The Evesham flagship PC - called the Evolution 2600Si - will be packaged with the Viewsonic V150 airpanel for a total price of £1,999 including VAT, which includes home installation.

The full spec of the Evolution 2600Si is more than just mid-range - it features such high spec elements as an 120Mb Hard Drive, 512MB DDR RAM, a 16x speed DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive and leading graphics and audio from ATI and Soundblaster respectively. The trouble is, the same machine with an ordinary display would cost less than £1,000.

The extra cash goes on the wireless display, which you can pick up and use anywhere within range. That's pretty much any room in an ordinary house, and in an office, anywhere the wireless LAN reaches.

Nancy Nemes, Microsoft's Product Manager EMEA for Smart Displays, made a statement about how the Smart Display "affords the freedom to enjoy a relaxed computing experience in any room of their home" and Keith Talbott, UK Director, of ViewSonic Europe said: "This first UK product bundle is a prime example of how Smart Displays are now at a reasonable price point for consumers and we are delighted to be working with Evesham to bring this technology to the high street."
